Diablo’s story

Diablo is a 10 year old horse located in Salisbury, NC. He was trained as a racehorse when he was young and developed arthritis. Now he can only do walk/trot and his owner does not listen to what he can and can’t do. He is always lame, hardly ever has food, and sometimes doesn’t have water. Please look at the video and if you are interested in helping Diablo message me!

Ezra Gilliam hopes for future

Sample of an interview with Ezra Gilliam about his life on a farm especially during the Depression and how the farm provided for his whole family before, during and after the depression and WWII. He is a Livingstone College graduate and a veteran of WWII. He expresses his wishes for the farm as he tells of his parents wishes. However, he worries and cautions others about the future of mankind. He was asked about a coming depression while filming this summer before the current financial crisis. The interview is for the LandTrust For Central NC. Gilliam is one of the regions few minority farmer left. It is produced by the new nameplate brand Environmental Films of JG Media LLC and is among the first pieces taped under that brand. Environmental Films was started in 2008 by Joseph girdler of JG Media LLC to promote Green and historical preservation issues. Its creation was inspired by Dr. John Wear during his Faith, Spirituality and Environmental Stewardship Conference at Catawba College’s Center For The Environment in May of 2008.

Maxwell Chambers of Salisbury

Maxwell Chambers was a prominent businessman and profound citizen of Salisbury. He was a planter and merchant who invested in the Salisbury Manufacturing Company. This company was organized in 1839, and Rowan Cotton Factory was constructed between the years of 1839 – 1840. This mill acreage eventually comes in control of Davidson College; neglected by the college and eventually sold to the Confederate Government. The cotton mill and land was bought by the government in 1861 and was deconstructed. The land was turned into the Salisbury Confederate Prison for Union soldiers. The facility was destroyed by Union troops in April 1865. His residence is a historic landmark in Salisbury.

National Cemetery of Salisbury

Salisbury National Cemetery was established by Confederate authorities to serve as the burial ground for captured Union soldiers, incarcerated at the prison in Salisbury. In the fall of 1864, the number of soldiers at Salisbury prison had doubled. It suffered from one of the highest prison death rates, approximately half the men were dying of disease or starvation, due to the food shortage in the South. It is unknown exactly how many prisoners were buried there, but the established figure is 11,700. The Union monuments at the National Cemetery are The Federal Monument to the unknown dead, The Pennsylvania Monument, the state of Maine erected a granite monument. The cemetery was dedicated in 1874; Salisbury National Cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
